Choosing a Plastic Surgeon

When comparing plastic surgeons, it's important to know that all "certification" credentials are not equal. It is possible for any doctor to obtain a "board certification" in cosmetic surgery in a short period of time. However, certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) is only granted to a physician who has graduated from an accredited medical school and has completed 5 years of residency training (usually minimum 3 years in general and minimum 2 years in plastic surgery), practice plastic surgery for at least two years, successfully complete comprehensive written and oral exams, and adhere to a strict code of ethics. In fact, ABPS is the only certifying board for plastic surgery recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties. ABPS certification is a credential with meaning.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), established in 1931, is the largest plastic surgery specialty organization in the world. This Symbol of Excellence designates plastic surgeons who are Members of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Plastic Surgeons who display this Symbol are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and are dedicated to the highest standards of patient care and continuing development of professional skills and competence. Membership requires certification, peer review, participation in continuing education and adherence to a strict code of ethics.

American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Inc., (ASAPS) Membership is limited to board certified plastic surgeons with significant experience in cosmetic surgical procedures. Members of ASAPS are a select group of board-certified plastic surgeons who have attained the highest level of achievement in cosmetic surgical training, continuing education and clinical experience.

The mission of The American Board of Plastic Surgery, Inc. is to promote safe, ethical, efficacious plastic surgery to the public by maintaining high standards for the education, examination, certification and recertification of plastic surgeons as specialists and subspecialists.

Fellow of The American College of Surgeons, an honor reserved only for the most distinguished surgeons. This organization is a scientific and educational association of surgeons that was founded in 1913 to improve the quality of care for the surgical patient by setting high standards for surgical education and practice.
